Cruel Irony

We received a phone call from Dr. Maris this morning, while we were still home due to a 2 hour ice/snow delay from school. I assumed it was about Christi’s cell line, because we know it’s been a “popular request” from researchers and I asked if I could quickly put Shayne on the other line.

Unfortunately, the news was of Christi’s incredible Nurse Practitioner – Pat Brophy’s death last night. Less than a year ago she had been diagnosed with cancer. Our hearts, prayers and thoughts are with Pat’s real and “CHOP” family. CHOP will never come close to finding a replacement like Pat! Ironically, I almost emailed yesterday to check on her. N

ow I tell myself there has been a turn of the tables and Christi, and all of the little CHOP kids, are welcoming Pat and showing her around. For some weird reason, I feel a bit of comfort knowing Pat is once again with Christi and those kids who depended on her so much. Rest in peace, dearest Pat.

This is terribly sad news. My heart goes out to Pat's family and all those at CHOP who loved her so.

Like Christi, Pat touched so many lives of people from all over the world who travelled to CHOP for treatment. Her death, like Christi's, is a global loss. She will be mourned in every culture's traditions, missed and prayed for in every language, and loved in the only universal language of the heart. God bless her family, near and far, as we grieve this great and beautiful lady who shared our good news, and held our hands through the bad news. Christi, take care of Pat for us, okay?

Oh my goodness I'm so very sorry to hear this horrible news. May God be with Pat's real and CHOP families and bring them comfort at this most difficult time.

With Love and Prayers,
Heather

Angela-I'm so sorry to hear about Christ's wonderful nurse to whom you referred on many occasions in the sweetest of terms. I remember her cancer diagnosis and thought about her frequently since.

I will pray for her family and the staff at CHOP. She will be missed.

Just re read your 6/14/07 post and watched the video - what a true hero - whether she wanted to be known as one or not. I am sure she is taking care of Christi and her friends now.

Thomas Team-

Wow! That must have knocked the wind out of you. I have no words of inspiration or insight, just that I feel for your family and I am disgusted that this evil disease continues to be a present factor in your lives. I am sure that she is getting a pretty awseome tour of all the museums and favorite play areas in heaven. I can picture all the little ones she helped there to greet her. I don't think it is weird at all that you feel comforted by her. She must have been a wonderful person and her soul will carry on in heaven.

I'm just devestated to hear this news. Pat was sooooo amazing, and you're completely right - no one will even come close to replace her.

No doubt Christi has already shown her around (and shown Pat all the pets she's been watching :) My prayers are with her and her family

How sad: I remember a long time ago you posted a video of her in action - she seemed like a very inspiring woman. May she rest in peace and reap the reward that is no doubt waiting for her thanks to her help for so many people.

Oh Angela, I am so, so sorry. I know she was close to your family and such a precious asset when Christi was @ CHOP. I will keep both her family and yours in my prayers.

Sincerely,

The wind chimes have been gently tinkling in the winter breezes this Valentine's Day, reminding me of our two angels. It so sad that Pat is gone. She was such a fine person and so wonderful with our children and all of us. Will never forget her and will take some comfort as you say that she is reunited with our children in the everafter.

May she Rest In Peace. Most likely like you said in the last paragraph. The kids including your daughter Christi are showing nurse Pat around and she is taking care of them too
